The word folate originates from the Latin word folium, which means LEAF. Folate is also known as B-9.
FACT: Our bodies have to get folate from food. What food? Dark green leafy vegetables.
Folate, being water-soluble, is easily and naturally absorbed and utilized by the body when it’s metabolized in the small intestines. On the other hand, folic acid requires the presence of a specific enzyme named dihydrofolate reductase, which is relatively rare in the body. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, found in supplements and added to processed, or “fortified,” foods. Folic Acid was only first introduced in the 1940’s.
Folate deficiency leads to a host of health problems including digestive disorders, anemia, cardiovascular disease, and most famously perhaps, birth defects. Folate helps produce DNA and form healthy new cells, which is why it’s especially important during pregnancy. It also prevents cognitive function and supports nerve and immune functions. We all need folate to help make DNA, repair DNA and create normal red blood cells.
