Many questions come in to Víos and we are always happy to answer. Knowledge is power.
We were recently asked a question about how the protein in our products is extracted. I thought this was a very good question and probably needed to be explained further. We are very proud to say that the protein in Vios products is not extracted at all. But rather, Matrix and PHYTE are whole-food plant based products. Meaning our products contain the whole pea powder, the whole quinoa powder, the whole barley grass powder, etc. So, what does this mean? It means you are getting the entire nutrient value of the plants and nothing is sacrificed in the process.
Have you ever noticed that when you tell people you are reducing your meat intake, going vegetarian or going vegan, the common response is: “Where are you going to get your protein from?”
There is a misconception that plants don’t have enough protein to sustain a balanced diet. And this could not be further from the truth if you are eating a whole-food, plant-based diet filled with a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes.
Here are the facts… We need to eat foods that supply us with the nine essential amino acids that our bodies can’t make on their own. Some plant-based foods have all of them (quinoa, buckwheat, soy, pumpkin seeds, spirulina, chia and hempseed) while others have a mix of some and not others. But variety is the key. And you will find by incorporating more plant proteins into your diet the better you will feel.
Here are some great benefits to plant protein:
Low in saturated fats.
Easy to digest.
Alkaline forming.
High in fiber.
High in vitamins and minerals.
Abundance of antioxidants to fight free radicals.
Naturally low in cholesterol and sodium.
Less stress on your liver and kidneys.
No added hormones.
More economical, especially if you eat in-season and eat local produce.
Diets that rely heavily on animal protein are typically much higher in compounds that contribute to cardiovascular disease, such as saturated fat and cholesterol. Even lean sources are still filled with additional hormones and antibiotics, as well as bacteria, parasites and carcinogens.
The research, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, focused on more than 130,000 participants who are part of two long-term Harvard-based studies.
Study authors found that substituting just 3 percent of daily calories from animal protein with plant protein was associated with a lower risk for death from all causes – a 34 percent drop when participants swapped out processed red meat for plant protein, and a 19 percent decrease when they replaced eggs.
By contrast, participants who increased their animal-source protein by 10 percent had an 8 percent higher risk of death from heart disease, and a 2 percent higher risk of death from all causes.
Truth be told, even if you love your animal protein and can’t think of giving it up; try just replacing one meal a day with plant protein. It’s worth it.
